However, there have been medical breakthroughs over the years to back up these claims. Currently, 16 states as well as the District of Columbia have approved medicinal marijuana to be prescribed by doctors. Colorado and Washington have recently passed legislation that also legalizes the recreational use of marijuana. The discussion about marijuana has been controversial for years. Many people argue that the drug should be legalized – especially for the use of treating medical issues. Recreational marijuana is much more controversial because it is not being used for medical reasons. The benefits of marijuana have long been known and Tod Mikuriya, a psychiatrist in California was a large advocator of legalizing marijuana. He helped to develop Proposition 215, which was the state ballot in California that allows doctors to prescribe marijuana for patients. In the 1960s, he began researching the therapeutic possibilities of marijuana and has provided a significant amount of research to the medical community. Dr. Mikuriya believed that over 200 ailments in the body could be treated with the use of marijuana. This included not only such common things as nausea, vomiting, chronic pain, and glaucoma but also such things as PMS, insomnia, and writer’s cramp. The benefits of smoking pot may be overstated by advocates and the risks may be overstated by opponents. This doesn’t stop researchers from studying the drug’s uses as well as proving how it can impact the body and provide benefits for a variety of ailments.
