The history and future of Kush cannabis

The history and future of Kush cannabis

Who doesn’t like some good Kush? If you’re a cannabis consumer, you will have had Kush at some point in your life. Question remains of course whether you had a good Kush, but if you did have a good one you’re bound to remember it.

Previously we delved into the history of Critical and about strains and hypes, in which we revealed the Suzy Seeds Aficionado Collection. But one of the originals is for sure Kush.

Because Kush are such important genetics in the cannabis world, in this Suzy’s Cannabis World Blog we delve into the history of Kush. Not just the history, but we also look at the current state of Kush and the future of Kush!

Where it all began: Hindu Kush

Kush varieties have a long history ranging all the way from the Hindu Kush area, bordering Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Tajikistan. Hence the name Hindu Kush was used for this bushy, wide plant. Unlike it’s haze cousins at the other side of the world, these Hindu Kush plants didn’t grow very tall and didn’t need to flower as long as Haze.

Hindu Kush Origins

When some of the hippies who had gone on the hippy trial to these parts of the world, on the way back they would carry back these Hindu Kush seeds. Same goes for any of the Afghan varieties you see that would end up to be crossed, resulting in varieties like Afghan Skunk and Afghan Skunk Auto. These Afghan varieties were much easier to grow indoors as well as outdoors.

In these regions, it’s also important to note the buds weren’t smoked. Instead, the Hindu Kush and Afghan varieties were made into hash like you see in the Dutch coffeeshops. Sadly enough, due to politics and criminalization, it will be very difficult to find nowadays. Most, if not all, hashish you’ll find in the coffeeshops comes from Morocco.

Back to Kush. The genetic traits of staying small and growing wide, flowering early, were favorable traits amongst those having to hide their plants. As such, many crosses would follow.

Creation of OG Kush and what ‘OG’ really stands for

The most famous Kush variety by far is OG Kush. There are many theories floating around where it comes from and what OG stands for, but with the internet and the spread of information there is finally an answer to both questions.

‘OG Kush started as an accidental pollination in Florida of Hindu Kush and an unknown strain from Northern California in the growroom of @origins_tk_og. This was the very first grow room of “OG Kush”, sparking a lifelong love of the cultivar that spread like wildfire. Not until a few years later did the Josh D crew come up with the name OG, after their initial ‘Kush’ name. Kush was being slapped onto anything to add value and confirmed it was something special. It changed the game.’

The ‘OG’ in OG Kush simply stands for Original, according to Josh D.

Crosses made with Kush genetics

Some argue that cannabis indica is long gone, considering it has been crossed so many times. Learn more about this in our blogpost about cannabis strains and hypes.

OG Kush is somewhere in pretty much all of the popular mostly indica varieties.

Girl Scout Cookies for example, is a cross between OG Kush and Durban Poison. Girl Scout Cookies gave rise to the Cookies empire of Berner. Girl Scout Cookies was also crossed again with Pink Panties to create Sunset Sherbert, which in turn led to all the Gelato crosses out there.

At the same time, breeders are also trying to go back to the original Kush flavours. You’ll still see plenty of Kush around. And different phenotypes, like OG#18, Tahoe OG, San Fernando Vallley OG and Ghost OG to just name a few.

Our favorites? Too many to mention really. Besides in the end it’s just as, or even more, important how and who is growing it. Either way, Kush is here to stay.
