Get a Good Night’s Sleep with Herbal Remedies
For years, people have been trying to get a good night’s sleep without using a lot of the expensive prescription drugs on the market that have a number of different side effects. Natural sleep remedies have been used for centuries and now many doctors are recommending them to patients as well.
Studies have shown that people are getting less and less sleep. Many are simply not making it a priority any more. Nine and a half hours of sleep was the norm back in the early 1900s. By the 1960s, it was about eight hours. Today, most people are lucky to get seven hours. Sleep is essential to everyone’s well-being, which is why sleep aids are such a popular thing on the market.
A variety of different natural sleep aids can be used. A very popular herbal sleep aid is valerian. Over 200 studies have shown that this mild sedative can provide a good night’s sleep without being addictive or leaving people with a “hangover” sensation in the morning. Catnip, chamomile and passionflower have also been effective for getting a good night’s sleep. These three are all mild sedatives and especially work well when a person is dealing with too much tension and stress, which is causing a person to be unable to wind down and fall asleep at night.
Any of these herbs can be taken as a capsule or mixed into a tea in order to be consumed an hour or so prior to going to bed. Some of the herbs can have an unpleasant smell and taste to them, especially valerian root, so it’s very common to see these herbs combined with others to help disguise the flavor and make them go down easier.
