The Northern Light certainly cannot be left out when discussing the most famous and popular cannabis plants. Northern Light was developed in California and introduced to the Netherlands in the 70’s by Neville Schoenmaker. Northern Light was the basis for the current Dutch ‘nederwiet’, so it truly is a plant the Dutch are proud of. The plant was originally and primarily a 100% Indica Afghani, but later many other hybrids were made with other strains to combine the properties of those strains, such as the longer growth of Sativa plants.

I have yet to come across a Dutch coffee shop where Northern Light is not on the menu. It is also used for all sorts of hybrids. The Northern Light has won the High Times Cannabis Cup more than once, namely in 1989, 1998 and again in 2009.

| Production | Northern Light was originally developed to grow indoors, but it can also be grown outdoors. When I grow my Northern Light indoors, it reaches an average height of 1.2 metres. When I grow it outdoors, I give it plenty of space, sun and nutrition. With this extra love and attention it can even grow up to 2 metres tall. The Northern Light has a very high yield, so is more than worth your extra attention. Northern Light has a flowering period of about 7/8 weeks, but some growers choose to harvest it after 7 weeks. This gives it a slightly stronger flavour, but somewhat reduces its effect. If you really want to go for the powerful high effect of Northern Light, I suggest waiting to harvest the plant until the trichomes (small resin secreting stalks/hair) begin to turn light brown. This is after about 8 weeks. Suzy's Tip: I highly recommend attempting to grow Northern Light; even for novice growers, growing this strain is a true experience. |
| Character & Flavour | Northern Light has a distinct, sweet scent and a soft, sweet and spicy flavour which will get you quite high. It always makes me very alert, happy and active. Northern Light also performs miracles with regard to my creativity and energy. It is certainly not a couch potato and I sometimes smoke it before going out. The unique flavour and strong high of Northern Light really must be experienced. In the medical field Northern Light is used against stress, anxiety and pain. |
