The medicinal science behind cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids

You have probably heard about THC and CBD by now, the two most well-known cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. CBD has even become so common you can find it in pretty much every country in regular shops being sold as CBD oil or a different product.

These two compounds are just a glimpse of the whole spectrum of compounds available in cannabis.

In this latest iteration of Suzy’s Cannabis World Blog, we go into the various (groups of) compounds and help you decide which cannabis seeds to buy based on their cannabinoids and terpenes content.

Cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids

Cannabinoids

Like we said before, the most well-known cannabinoids are THC and CBD. THC is the main psychoactive compound, while CBD is most known for its medicinal properties. But there are actually 113 different cannabinoids isolated from cannabis.

Of course, we can’t go into detail with all of them, but we would like to introduce you to at least a few new ones that you should know about: THCV, CBN, and CBG.

THCV

While THC will make you hungry, THCV can be useful as well. THCV is most commonly known for its ability to suppress hunger. But it’s also a known anticonvulsant, which is helpful for epilepsy patients. THCV is also a neuroprotectant, which could potentially prevent or slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. And preliminary research also suggests THCV helps bone growth.

CBN, or Cannabinol

CBN, or cannabinol, is most commonly known for its aid with sleep and thus also with insomnia. But CBN also works for pain relief, as an antibiotic, to stimulate your appetite, is anti-inflammatory and as a compound helpful in fighting cancer. It was found by Ralph Mechoulam, who also found THC, back in 1975.

CBG or Cannabigerol

CBG, or cannabigerol, was found even earlier in 1965. While there has been no clinical study done yet on humans, CBG is known to be building block for other cannabinoids and normally turns into THC and CBD.

Full-spectrum

Luckily, all of these cannabinoids are already in your cannabis. While the amounts may vary, it is common knowledge that to really exploit the full medicinal properties of the cannabis plant, it’s highly recommended to use full-spectrum cannabis oil. This basically means you use the whole plant to make oil and it will contain all of the cannabinoids which work together for an ‘entourage’ effect. You can, however, also get your CBD oil separately if that is what you’re after.

Terpenes

Terpenes are known to be the compounds expressing the smell and taste of cannabis, while also having their medicinal properties. Terpenes are also found outside of cannabis however: they’re also what gives fruit and vegetables their smell and taste.

In cannabis, the most common terpenes are Myrcene, Pinene, Caryophyllene, Limonene, and Terpinolene. These terpenes give the herbal, piney, peppery, citrus, and fruity flavors.

Flavonoids

And finally flavonoids. A flavonoid is a group of various compounds that are helpful thanks to their anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antibiotic, antioxidant, and antidiarrheal properties.

Flavonoids can be found in the leaves of the plant, but not in the seeds or roots. So to receive the benefits, you will want full-spectrum cannabis oil.

Strain-specific full-spectrum cannabis oil

To make full-spectrum cannabis oil, you need cannabis. To help you become self-sufficient too, we’re here to help you to choose the right cannabis seeds that will be most helpful to you.
